Andre was very keen to take more action but was frustrated by his inability due to lack of support up the line.  Apart from getting a separate cardboard bin and starting to measure job waste (when tools researched) there is little he can currently do but he is very keen to find new opportunities and take actions.

He is interested in measuring and potentially off-setting any current carbon footprint.

 We selected AJ Electrical to be one of our pilot businesses under our “High Discard Materials based” survey which we undertook on 7 July 2023.

Whilst in these industries it can be very frustrating it is only through discovering the issues and working through possible solutions that actions can be taken.

Actions Taken at the time of the Survey

  • Recycle copper and wire goes to scrap metal

  • Willing to take more actions where can

  • Recycle cardboard (get a lot) however often the bin is overflowing - shared bin so should have their own bin

  • Don’t print job sheets or invoices anymore - all through phone and sent to staff/clients

  • Use Eco store for towels, dishwashing liquid and cleaners and refill

  • Have purchased a new van, whilst still petrol fuel costs have dropped from $1,000 pm to $300 pm - will consider electric options when next need to upgrade any vehicles

  • Do encourage car pooling if it is possible on a job

Actions Not taken at the time of the Survey and would like to consider

  • Cable drums are waste - these are a big issue. AJ feels they should be taken back by supplier and reused but are not (J A Russell) he believes it is because they are imported from Australia so it’s too difficult - or they should be made from recyclable material

  • Currently don’t audit their waste but interested in finding out more

  • Don’t measure carbon footprint as don’t know how but interested in finding out

  • There are only 2 lighting manufacturers in NZ (who, do they take any enviro actions)?

  • Getting their own cardboard recycle bin instead of current shared bin that fills too quickly

  • Ways to measure waste on jobs to consider reduction

  • Measuring of carbon footprint

  • Interested in looking at off-setting emissions - will send tools/information

  • The business has made a significant effort to move away from single-use practices and items and towards re-use instead. An example of this is establishing a mug library or borrowing system to reduce the use of single-use coffee cups.


  • This business is excellent at recycling. Following a waste audit, this business has proven to be able to identify and sort what can and cannot be recycled in curbside collection and makes an effort to recycle the items that cannot. An example of this is recycling their TetraPak, batteries, soft plastics and other items with Whangaparāoa Recycling Centre.


  • The business has measured its average power consumption over a month and taken action to reduce its power usage and has proven to do so significantly. Actions can include changing lightbulbs, upgrading to low-power appliances and adapting heating and cooling systems.


  • This business is taking steps to reduce its single-use waste. Once a business has demonstrated a significant and sustained reduction of single-use practices and items, it can become a re-use champion or be close to zero.


Since the original survey J A Russell now accept cable drums for recycling and therefore A J Electrical have added this as part of their Recycling Champion actions.

  • This business has taken steps to significantly reduce its paper usage. This can include digitising processes such as customer paperwork, offering receipts optionally not automatically to customers and saving paper that is good on one side for other purposes.
