The Hope Shop
The Hope Shop are a very small store so good for us to use as a comparison, they currently have good practices particularly re labeling of clothing but this sort of action is impractical for larger scale action.
They currently pass on the problem of unsold clothes and are interested in finding out other options but are limited with staff and time.
We selected The Hope Shop to be one of our pilot businesses under our “Retail based” survey which we undertook on 12 July 2023 because of their size, management purely by volunteers and their willingness to be open and look for opportunities.
Actions Taken at the time of the Survey
Rub out and reuse price tags
Pin price tags on clothing with safety pins and reuse
Already done a HCZW waste audit and some measuring and taking small actions
Only give customers receipts on request
Got no printer and no paperwork
Got a volunteer who takes their waste and sorts for recycling - nothing physical is sorted in store this is any non-clothing waste
No food waste as little/no eating in store
Only put clothes in bags if asked and use brown paper bags or reuse bags - most customers don’t want bags
Minimal products used for cleaning as mostly just dust and sweep (unsure who cleaned the toilet)
All products are donated so all local
Actions Not taken at the time of the Survey and would like to consider
Currently send unsold clothes to Hospice or in clothing bins however this is just passing the problem on - would be keen to find out other options for recycling or reusing their unsold clothes instead of just passing on the problem
Got no targets re waste reduction but there is little waste anyway

-
The business is sourcing local products, produce or onselling for local makers. For example, this could look like cafes buying NZ produce to cook with, and the homeware store stocks locally made ceramics or crafts
-
This business is taking steps to reduce its single-use waste. Once a business has demonstrated a significant and sustained reduction of single-use practices and items, it can become a re-use champion or be close to zero.
-
The business has been waste audited by an experienced waste audit group.
