The Avenue Hair Salon

570/588 Whangaparaoa Road, Stanmore Bay, Whangaparaoa - 09-424-7522 - info@theavenuehair.co.nz - https://avenuehair.co.nz/

We are not only a hair salon with a pool of talented and creative hairdressers where we listen to what our clients want, we also belong to the Sustainable Salons program. This program rescues up to 95% of salon resources from landfill and finds repurposing solutions that benefit the environment and give back to our community

The Avenue Hair Salon

The Avenue Hair Salon in Stanmore Bay was one of the Health and Beauty pilot businesses to enrol to demonstrate their climate action work in The Green Scheme.

We selected The Avenue to be one of our pilot businesses under our “Health and Beauty based” survey which we undertook on 12 July 2023.

The Avenue are part of the Sustainable Salons programme and therefore already very proactive about taking climate change action and also take some great actions off their own back.

There are a few further actions that could be started straight away but it seems more staff buy in and education could make a big difference with some of the smaller, salon based activities.

Actions Taken at the time of the Survey

  • Part of the Sustainable Salons programme

  • Ensure any brands they use are also eco friendly

  • Do currently print an eftpos receipt but only if asked for

  • Client forms and notes are digitalized on ipads

  • With Sustainable Salons the only waste is staff waste

  • SS take soft plastics

  • Have no packaging for client items

  • Send coffee capsules back to the supplier who composts also sourced locally

  • No paper towels

  • Refill most cleaning products - use an eco store cleaner, buy a big container and refill

  • Do use a few concentrate tablets - used to use Daz tablets (these are NOT eco friendly)

  • Have water regulator installed

Actions Not taken at the time of the Survey and would like to consider

  • Don’t measure waste - would like to do a waste audit

  • Print a daily schedule for each staff member and put on a clipboard (suggest GOOS)

  • Staff contracts are currently printed

  • Staff find it confusing over waste such as takeaway coffee cups, sushi containers, etc - need education. When unsure they just put in landfill (do not put in compost/recycling as worse)

  • No measuring or tracking of carbon footprint as don’t know how but interested to find out

  • Don’t know if lights are LED - looking at revamping salon so can look at that time

  • All food scraps go in the bin

  • Installation of solar panels for power savings

  • Would like more buy in from staff on salon sustainable practices

  • Interested in doing a HCZW waste audit

  • Information/education for staff on recycle waste

  • Interested in carbon footprint measuring and tracking

  • Interested in getting a list of compost collectors

  • Interested in finding our more about best Kiwisaver options for staff, eg Pathfinder and looking at Mindful Money

  • Would like more customer education around Sustainable Salons (this should be in the pack provided)

The Avenue Hair Salon 2023 Certifications

CLICK HERE for explanations on all available certifications

  • The business has made a significant effort to move away from single-use practices and items and towards re-use instead. An example of this is establishing a mug library or borrowing system to reduce the use of single-use coffee cups.

  • This business is excellent at recycling. Following a waste audit, this business has proven to be able to identify and sort what can and cannot be recycled in curbside collection and makes an effort to recycle the items that cannot. An example of this is recycling their TetraPak, batteries, soft plastics and other items with Whangaparāoa Recycling Centre.

  • This business is taking steps to reduce its single-use waste. Once a business has demonstrated a significant and sustained reduction of single-use practices and items, it can become a re-use champion or be close to zero.

  • The business has measured its average power consumption over a month and taken action to reduce its power usage and has proven to do so significantly. Actions can include changing lightbulbs, upgrading to low-power appliances and adapting heating and cooling systems.

  • This Salon has partnered with the organisation Sustainable Salons and gained their certification. This means that they have significantly reduced their waste and have their hard-to-recycle materials collected through Sustainable Salons.

  • This business uses eco friendly products and takes eco friendly actions in the cleaning of their premises and goods.

  • This business has taken steps to significantly reduce its paper usage. This can include digitising processes such as customer paperwork, offering receipts optionally not automatically to customers and saving paper that is good on one side for other purposes.
