CoastLab is about living for something more than the weekend. Our collaborative working space offers all the essentials you need to be productive, as well as placing you in a community of like-minded creatives and professionals.

Coast Lab

Coast Lab began their sustainability journey on day one but joined the Green Scheme to troubleshoot a few barriers and learn about what other actions they could take.

We selected Coast Lab to be one of our pilot businesses under our “Office based” survey which we undertook on 5 July 2023.

Whilst Suia felt she wasn’t doing much she was certainly taking a lot of positive actions. There were a few more steps she could take immediately but possibly the greatest impact would be to have more buy in and participation by members who use the premises.

Actions Taken at the time of the Survey

  • Got compost bins and recycling

  • Use bamboo toilet paper

  • Use Eco friendly hand towels in bathroom

  • Have a note on the bin re recycling

  • Use Green Gorilla for all organics,

  • Use waste management for recycling

  • Food scraps are taken home

  • Have digitized systems and processes for contracts etc

  • Discourage printing where can - sign by printer “Think Before You Print”

  • Avoid any unnecessary giveaway products

  • Use Ever Daily products for cleaning inc dishwasher

  • They provide the Ever Daily products for the cleaners who come in to clean the premises

  • Have LED lights where can but find light bulbs don’t last very long - would love alternatives (these use about 1/3 of their power)

Coast Lab Green Scheme Certificate

Actions Not taken at the time of the Survey and would like to consider

  • Don’t measure waste but keen for a waste audit

  • Don’t collect soft plastics

  • Haven’t measured carbon footprint - don’t know how but keen to find out

  • Use a lot of power but would like to find more options to reduce - heat pumps, lights, kitchen

  • Keen to be part of the Keep Cup campaign - could give away to new members

  • Most used products are toilet paper, paper towels and coffee beans - source cleaning products from Ever Daily*

  • Keen to measure carbon footprint

  • Would like to get bike staples outside to encourage more cycling, Drifters café would also be keen on sharing these

  • Would like to encourage more buy in from members - all members are encouraged to save power but this can’t be forced - sometimes heat pump or lights left on when last person leaves!

  • Wants more education around actions for members

  • The business has made a significant effort to move away from single-use practices and items and towards re-use instead. An example of this is establishing a mug library or borrowing system to reduce the use of single-use coffee cups.

  • This business is excellent at recycling. Following a waste audit, this business has proven to be able to identify and sort what can and cannot be recycled in curbside collection and makes an effort to recycle the items that cannot. An example of this is recycling their TetraPak, batteries, soft plastics and other items with Whangaparāoa Recycling Centre.

  • This business is taking steps to reduce its single-use waste. Once a business has demonstrated a significant and sustained reduction of single-use practices and items, it can become a re-use champion or be close to zero.

  • The business has measured its average power consumption over a month and taken action to reduce its power usage and has proven to do so significantly. Actions can include changing lightbulbs, upgrading to low-power appliances and adapting heating and cooling systems.

  • The business is composting the majority of their food scraps and some soft paper through a composting system. For example, all food scraps and napkins from the kitchen are composted but perhaps not all the paper towels  from the bathroom.

  • This business uses eco friendly products and takes eco friendly actions in the cleaning of their premises and goods.

  • This business has been diligent in ensuring that staff are knowledgeable about any sustainable practices implemented and ongoingly train and upskill staff to ensure sustainable changes are consistent and long term.
