Hair Scene
Hair Scene is not a member of Sustainable Salons however hold Green and Gold Accreditation from Hair & Barbers Association NZ.
They are an example of a local business who works hard on their carbon footprint and should be acknowledged and championed for the amazing number of actions they are taking.
We selected Hair Scene to be one of our pilot businesses under our “Health and Beauty based” survey which we undertook on 4 July 2023. We selected them as they were a business we could learn a lot from and help champion their actions.
Actions Taken at the time of the Survey
Reduce paper waste by using both sides for client notes
Shred paper and put in compost or use for packaging
No eftpos receipts - emailed to clients
Documents are digitized, minimal print
Weigh waste colour then to landfill instead of pouring away
Virgin hair goes to Dunedin or compost
Long hair goes to be made into wigs
Foils are separated and go to scrap metal, same with colour tubes and cans
Use Schwartzkopf as all packaging is green
Got stickers on bins and different coloured lids
Compost goes home with a staff member
Buy and use cups from hospice and sugar bowls not sugar sachets
Coffee grinds, teabags, food scraps separated
Separate soft plastics
Ventilation on timer to go off at night
Changed light bulbs for $1,000 to LED and now save $120 pm
Use and sell “clean” brands of shampoo and conditioner
Use enviro friendly capsules for cleaning spray and wipe
Encourage washing bowls in luke warm water for power savings
Recycle hairdryers and where possible get repaired
Send blades separate for recycling
Use Enjo microfibre cloths (use just water no products)
Donate magazines to hospice/op shops
Reuse necktowels and gloves - no single use
Don’t just run the tap when preparing products or cleaning

The business has made a significant effort to move away from single-use practices and items and towards re-use instead. An example of this is establishing a mug library or borrowing system to reduce the use of single-use coffee cups.

The business has measured its average power consumption over a month and taken action to reduce its power usage and has proven to do so significantly. Actions can include changing lightbulbs, upgrading to low-power appliances and adapting heating and cooling systems.

This business is excellent at recycling. Following a waste audit, this business has proven to be able to identify and sort what can and cannot be recycled in curbside collection and makes an effort to recycle the items that cannot. An example of this is recycling their TetraPak, batteries, soft plastics and other items with Whangaparāoa Recycling Centre.
