GJ Gardner Rodney East
GJ Gardner Rodney East, based in Orewa, were happy to be part of the pilot Green Scheme survey. However, they feel they do as much as it practical at this stage but are very aware that this is not enough and there needs to be both behavorial and attitude changes in the industry. They also believe that there aren’t enough options, support or buy in from higher in the hierarchy to be able to act and make the changes that are required.
GJ Gardner was selected as one of our pilot businesses under our “High Discarded Materials based” survey which we undertook on 3 August 2023.
We talked about their frustrations in the construction industry but also focused on the positive actions they are able to take in their large office environment.
Actions Taken at the time of the Survey
All jobs are estimated out at the start to avoid over ordering and reduce waste as much as possible
Houses are designed around materials to be used to help minimize waste
Trying to get more project managers digital
Use eco friendly products - toilet paper and cleaning products from With Small
All office supplies are environmentally friendly
They do have an alert system between project managers to share resources if can, eg if a surplus of something on a job
Repurpose some items, held in storage in Whangaparaoa - this works but is a clunky system
All houses are built very sustainably following good practices
A couple of good points that came out of our discussions were -
Developers such as Milldale should have their own programme for recycling in place to help developers
It should be a resource consent requirement/condition to have recycling practices (coming in by 2040)?
Demolition companies have good circular recycle systems - often tied to a construction side
Actions Not taken at the time of the Survey and would like to consider
Most wasteful are remaining products, eg off cuts of timber, gib, etc - no current action
Council require a full set of plans on site for every job which means a lot of printing
Hadn’t heard of B-Corp but would like details
Contract out rubbish waste to North Waste - don’t recycle - waste includes polystyrene, plastic, metal, pink batts, etc
Would like ideas and keen to support but need to be practical and workable
