The Cat’s Pyjamas

The Cat’s Pyjamas is a small Op Shop who do what they can but are very much limited by funds. They are keen to do everything they can and already take some great actions.

There are a few small things they can immediately change but need some advice on some of the larger issues.

We selected The Cat’s Pyjamas to be one of our pilot businesses under our “Retail based” survey which we undertook on 2 August 2023 because of their enthusiasm, reliability on funding and willingness to be open and take whatever actions were practical.

Actions Taken at the time of the Survey

  • Unsold clothing take a lot home and husband uses in his workshop as rags

  • No paper towels in toilet

  • Take rubbish home and sort into recycling

  • Burn paper receipts  in home fireplace

  • Use old newspapers as wrappings

  • People drop off paper or reuse bags to use

  • Low power use - cost not high

  • Mother and daughter operation so carpool to work

  • Take any food scraps home and feed to the pukekos on lifestyle block

  • Everything that comes in and goes out stays local

  • Do upcycle some pieces of furniture if able to

  • Put out a rack of items that can’t be sold for free - these always go and very quickly

  • The business has made a significant effort to move away from single-use practices and items and towards re-use instead. An example of this is establishing a mug library or borrowing system to reduce the use of single-use coffee cups.

  • This business is excellent at recycling. Following a waste audit, this business has proven to be able to identify and sort what can and cannot be recycled in curbside collection and makes an effort to recycle the items that cannot. An example of this is recycling their TetraPak, batteries, soft plastics and other items with Whangaparāoa Recycling Centre.

  • This business is taking steps to reduce its single-use waste. Once a business has demonstrated a significant and sustained reduction of single-use practices and items, it can become a re-use champion or be close to zero.

  • This business has been diligent in ensuring that staff are knowledgeable about any sustainable practices implemented and ongoingly train and upskill staff to ensure sustainable changes are consistent and long term.
