High Discarded Materials
We coined this term for a group of industries which have a high level of what many consider “waste”. In fact many of the materials discarded as waste are not in fact waste and can often be reused or repurposed hence our term “high discarded materials”.
The high discarded materials industries include many businesses in construction and manufacture such as builders, electricians, sign writers and most types of high level manufacture, etc.
In our 2023 surveys we concentrated on three specific high discarded materials services as below. 2024 will focus on similar industries and introduce manufacturing.
Our 3 high discarded materials participants for 2023 were NZ Sign Solutions in Stanmore Bay, GJ Gardner Rodney East in Orewa and AJ Electrical Services in Silverdale.

Hospitality

The origins of the Green Scheme were in the hospitality industries with a programme in place prior to this Auckland Council supported project and we enhanced and continued in this space in 2023.
Participants prior to the 2023 work included Two Spoons Cafe, Manly Food Mart, Cafe Manly and Drifters Coffee.
In our 2023 surveys we kept the focus on the cafe/restaurant sector. 2024 will continue in the same vein and also introduce accommodation.
Our participants for 2023 were Ferntinental/Forbes Homemade Gourmet.

Retail
Retail industries include apparel, automotive, electronics, supermarkets and convenience stores, distributors, entertainment retail, second hand and home furnishings.
In our 2023 surveys we concentrated on the sector that could also be under the classification of “high discarded materials” being Op shops. By their very nature their “waste” production is very high however, as we discovered, there are many actions they can take to help reduce his issue. 2024 will continue the same but also introduce a couple of new retail industry types.
Our 3 retail participants for 2023 were The Salvation Army Family Store in Stanmore Bay, The Cat’s Pyjamas Op Shop and in Stanmore Bay and The Hope Shop in Manly Village.
